Meet the Allen’s!

As you probably know, the rooftop pictures I posted a few days back led to a breakthrough in what we know about The UP. He did not live in the Greensboro/High Point, NC area, but instead in Durham, NC. Some Googling of signage in those photos led me to the Endangered Durham blog, who’s maintainer, Gary, has been a Godsend!

Awhile back, I posted this photo:

This was the first time we had a name to go along with anyone attached with the photobox. But, who was O.W. Allen? Gary was nice enough to go to library in Durham and do some research for us. Mr. Allen’s full name was Owen W. Allen and he and his wife Vivian were listed as living at 706 May Road in Durham in 1952. He was also listed as working at the Durham Hosiery Mill #6, which Gary also identified in the background of some of the photos. Apparently, Mr. Allen & family moved from a house in the Edgemont neighborhood near the mill to the one on May Rd, which is the one pictured above. I’d also assume that’s house where all the interior shots came from.

Unfortunately, the Edgemont neighborhood & the house on May Rd. have been demolished.

To follow up on this, I did some digging on my own. A Social Security Death Index search at Rootsweb turned up a record for an O.W. Allen in Durham, NC. He was born April 22, 1906 & passed away on Aug 26, 1993. I have no doubt this is The UP’s father. Couldn’t find any records for Vivian Allen, unfortunately. Find-A-Grave did not have an entry for either person. I believe this lady is Vivian:

Familysearch.org had a 1930 Census entry for the Allen’s. O.W. Allen was 23 years old at the time & Vivian was 20. They were listed as having two children; Owen W., Jr., age 2 and Alton, an infant. Twenty years or so later, i.e. the time period of the photos in the box, would put both boys around the age of the young men we’ve seen in this blog.

So, are Owen Jr. &/or Alton The UP? If so, which one of our cast of characters are they? Or did Owen Sr. & Vivian have more children, one of which could be The UP? Answers to some questions just lead to more questions, don’t they?

But, that’s what makes this so interesting!

I’d like to thank Gary at Endangered Durham once again for all his help. Please check out his site if you haven’t already done so.

Oddly enough, there’s an Allen Lake only a few miles from that address.

Interesting!!! I’ll have to do some research on that. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence, but you never know.
